Tanzania mid-range safari with children
Going on safari with children is really cool, provided they enjoy it just as much as you do.
It is perfectly possible, with suitable destinations, child-friendly lodges, and tailored activities for an unforgettable family vacation.
Age and preparation:
Children can join a safari at a young age, but it depends on their interest and patience. Some parents take their child from the age of two, while others wait until they are six or older to fully enjoy the experience. Important considerations include whether the child gets excited about animals, can remain quiet during game drives, and has bladder control, as you cannot simply stop for a toilet break along the way. Summa African Adventure recommends going on a safari with children from the age of 6.
An average game drive or game walk lasts 2 to 4 hours, usually early in the morning or late in the afternoon when animals are most active. During these activities, a professional guide (ranger) accompanies the family and ensures safety and provides education about nature. Child-friendly safaris often offer an adjusted pace of travel, fun activities for children, and sufficient rest periods. With the right preparation and child-friendly choices, a safari can become an unforgettable experience for the whole family, where children both learn from and enjoy African nature and wildlife.
All our safari packages can be extended with day trips. You can find these on the day trips page.
Most families combine a safari with a few days on Zanzibar's stunning beaches. There is a wide range of domestic flights flying from Arusha (the safari hub) to the island.

Your drive will pass through typical Maasai land, and soon Ol Doinyo Lengai - the sacred mountain of the Maasai - will appear in the distance before you reach the small Maasai village of Ngare Sero. Here, we will be warmly welcomed and can experience the atmosphere of everyday Maasai life. After lunch, you will take a guided walk to Lake Natron, whose shores glow pink as thousands of flamingos come to breed in the alkaline lake.
In the late afternoon you will go to your lodge and you can share your experiences with the children

Day 3 Serengeti
Serengeti is home to the enormous migratory herds of wildebeests and zebras during the dry season. Very fascinating!!
The northern Serengeti remains an untamed wilderness full of beautiful landscapes and an abundance of wildlife. However, the northern Serengeti also supports a wealth of indigenous wildlife, including lions, elephants, hippos, giraffes, crocodiles, and the rare oribi antelopes.
In the evening you can enjoy a campfire with your family and delicious food in the restaurant
Accommodation: Olmorijo luxury camp ( nothern Serengeti)
Day 4 Seronera Valley
We are now going to the Seronera Valley, the Seronera River Valley, located in the south-central region of the park, is one of the most popular areas in the entire reserve. Known as the Big Cat Capital of Africa, the Seronera is rich in lion, leopard and cheetah – and people often spot all three in one day of game drives. Look for leopards around the Seronera River, which is home to one of Africa’s densest populations of big cats, while lions can often be seen on the kopjes (rocky outcrops). While the year-round supply of water from the Seronera River means that the area is excellent for wildlife spotting throughout the year, April to June is the peak season for game viewing in the Seronera, as this is when the plains are full of migrating wildebeest, zebra and gazelle as they’re making their way up north. The central location of the Seronera means that it’s one of the best places to see the Great Migration in action, as the animals are moving through the area for months.
Our guide passionately tells you everything about the wildlife that lives here.
After this beautiful day you return to your lodge
Accommodation: Tanzania bush camp ( Central Serengeti)

Day 6 Ngorongoro Crater
After breakfast, you will drive along the crater rim to Seneto Gate on the west side, which offers an impressive view! The Ngorongoro Crater provides a home for a large number of animals due to the reliable availability of water. Animals often move in and out. The number of wildebeests and zebras increases during the dry season, while the number of elands, elephants, and waterbucks rises during the wet season. Look out for the 'Big Five' - buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, and black rhinoceros. After intensive wildlife viewing, the journey continues at night towards Lake Eyasi.
Enjoy your evening at the lodge

Crafting magical memories for young explorers
Your children on safari isn’t just a holiday, it’s the gift of wonder.
With Summa African Adventure, kids discover the world not through textbooks or screens, but beneath the shade of ancient baobabs, while following giraffe tracks with local guides or listening to elephants breathe in the stillness of the wild.
They meet local communities, sit with the Maasai, hear their stories, learn their dances, and feel their profound connection to nature. It’s never a performance—it’s an authentic exchange, a moment of real cultural connection.
Here, family time slows. You share quiet moments, bursts of laughter, and memories your children will one day pass on to their own families.
A safari with kids means showing them the wild as it truly is—raw, free, and breathtaking. It means helping them understand that we are part of nature, not separate from it.
With Summa African Adventure, it’s not just about spotting wildlife. It’s about nurturing a new generation that feels the heartbeat of Africa—and respects the people who have lived in harmony with it for centuries.
So—why wait? The best classroom has no walls!!

Tips for going on safari with children
Good preparation is a must. If you choose to take your child on safari, be sure to prepare well. Ensure they have warm clothing and a cap or hat. It can get very cold, especially during the morning game drives.
A few pairs of long pants and sweaters will come in handy and also work well against mosquitoes. If you are traveling to a country where tsetse flies are present, do not bring blue or black clothing. This attracts these biting flies.
Furthermore, for a safari, it is wise to bring neutral colors so that you stand out less to wild animals. This doesn't all have to be khaki, but stay away from bright colors!
Binoculars are indispensable during a game drive, and children love them too. Buy a special pair of children's binoculars.
Also handy to bring along: something for distraction, such as a simple toy or book, and a few snacks or something to drink in case of acute hunger and thirst.
If possible, explain clearly to your child what you are going to do and make clear agreements.
Don't plan a safari that lasts a whole day. 3-4 hours looking for wild animals is more than enough for almost all children, and especially when the children are small, you will have had enough yourself after a few hours. An added benefit of a half-day safari is that the children can burn off their energy at the pool for the rest of the day!

Safety and comfort for the entire family
We prioritise your family's peace of mind. Our experienced team meticulously plans every detail of your safari, ensuring a worry-free trip. From carefully selected accommodations to expert guides, we take every measure to guarantee a safe and comfortable experience for you and your children.
