Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is usually the most convenient route for a safari in northern Tanzania.
There are often direct flights to it.
Kilimanjaro Airport is located near Arusha, about an hour's drive away, a major departure point for safaris to Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti, among others.
If, for example, you are taking a safari from Arusha to Tarangire – Ngorongoro – Serengeti, we recommend flying to JRO.
Flying to Arusha is also possible, but is often more expensive and usually involves a layover of a few hours.
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
This is the international airport where you can fly from the Netherlands to Tanzania. It is located between Arusha and Moshi and is a major gateway to the northern safari circuits.
Arusha Airport (ARK)
Arusha Airport is located closer to the city of Arusha and is primarily used for domestic and regional flights, for example to Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, and other destinations in Tanzania.
Another option: via Nairobi
Another frequently used route is:
→ Nairobi (Kenya) → Kilimanjaro (Tanzania)
This can be interesting if you want to combine Kenya and Tanzania, but for a safari that takes place entirely in Tanzania, going directly to JRO is usually simpler.
Arusha Airport is particularly useful for domestic connections.
