Mkomazi is located in northeastern Tanzania, right on the border with Kenya. The park is part of the larger Mkomazi-Tsavo ecosystem, together with Tsavo West in Kenya. It covers an area of approximately 3,245 km².
The landscape is very different from the famous endless grasslands of the Serengeti. You will find dry savannah, acacia forests, hills, and mountainous landscapes. On clear days, you can even see Kilimanjaro in the distance, while the Pare and Usambara mountains frame the landscape.
What is Mkomazi primarily known for?
Mkomazi's main specialty is two special and endangered animal species:
Black Rhinoceros
Mkomazi has an important Black Rhino Sanctuary, where black rhinoceroses are protected and where visitors can learn more about conservation.
African Wild Dog
The park is also important for the protection and reintroduction of the African wild dog. These animals live in social herds and are among the most extraordinary predators you can encounter during a safari.
In addition, you may encounter elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, oryxes, gerenuks, and lesser kudus, among others.
Special animals
Mkomazi is interesting for travelers who do not just want to see the Big Five. There are several species living there that you do not easily encounter everywhere in Tanzania, such as:
Fringe-eared oryx
Gerenuk
Lesser kudu
African wild dog
Black rhino
The gerenuk, for example, is special because this antelope can stand on its hind legs to reach leaves from higher bushes.

Mkomazi has more than 450 registered bird species. This makes it an interesting destination for bird lovers as well.
